Secret Equals, Mika Vatinyan
Mika Vatinyan is a multi-disciplinary artist working in the fields of cinema, acting, music, design and photography. Vatinyan’s practice of an actor, theater director and artist engages with the ‘image’ in most of its possible manifestations and aims to read the codes that lie behind the seduction of the image. His works lack any kind of ideological motive and, by celebrating absurdity, insist upon the significance of emotion, mystery and paradox in our engagement with visual representations of reality. Lives and works in Yerevan, Armenia. Lives and works in Yerevan, Armenia.
Secret Equals is a suite of 13 large-scale oil paintings, oscillating between conceptualism, minimalism and abstract expressionism meditating on the relationship between the viewer and art object. It focuses on the investigation of the artwork’s incumbent promise to reveal a ‘secret knowledge’ about the world and itself. The work is an investigation on the meaning of painting in the contemporary world and a meditation on the unspoken contract between the artist and the viewer. Based on his research on the various histories of medieval, modernist and abstract painting, the artist draws upon a variety of references in order to deconstruct this unspoken contract for an ‘intellectual insight’.
The projects is being realized under the Financial Support for Art Projects program of Armenia Art Foundation.
